If you load and view this sound clip in Audacity, you'll see the blue area extends far above and below the center line creating a "burr hair cut" effect on the top (and bottom) at many points. These are places where the mic record level was set too high causing the recording to become distorted.
The distorted loudness is very shocking when the clip is played (and quite an ironic surprise! after clicking on a link named, "listen.")
The loudness and distortion are most dominant qualities to me in this recording-- even above the traffic din and truck tail pipe etc. I bet the sounds were bouncing around and seemed very dynamic under the bridge, but a blog site visitor, of course, has only the recording to form impressions from.
Could it possibly be the headphones you were using to select the edits were of marginal quality? I tried the (short cabled) "ear buds" that came with the NH700 recorder and the jumbled distortion in your recording, "underbridge.mp3" was evident to me.
I am a dancer, choreographer, teacher and student living in New York City. I am currently working on an MFA at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and am on faculty at NYU. Keep an eye out for my dance group, Gerald Casel Dance...
